The Bird Feeder Bandit

The other day our bird feeder got hit by a thief.  A four-legged bandit with a huge fluffy tail.

What's that hanging off the bird feeder?

I looked out my window to see a squirrel hanging by his hind legs from one of my husband's bird feeders.  He was helping himself to the seed.

Thieving squirrel!

While I marveled at the little guy's acrobatics, I wasn't super-pleased to see him munching down on the suet block we'd set out for the birds.

Peek-a-boo!

But the squirrel paid me no mind, even when I appeared at the window, camera in hand, and began firing shots (photo shots, that is).

The culprit escapes....

Eventually Mr. squirrel sauntered down the tree, mouth full of evidence.  Although I was able to catch him with my camera, I wasn't fast enough to apprehend this speedy four-legged criminal.  Justice will have to wait for another day!  :)

  3. Your photos are much better than the videos I see on a newscast of a bank robbery. :) Last year I bought myself a squirrel proof bird feeder. At the time I resented the price I had to pay. I actually saved a bundle on bird seed. The squirrels still got their feed from my bird proof squirrel feeder.

  11. Steam comes out my ears when I think of our thieving squirrels. They are destructive. I had a heavy duty metal mesh feeder and darned if the the squirrels didn't bend the metal to try to get to the seed.

I finally lamented to the manager of Wild Birds Unlimited the problems the squirrels were causing. He said, "You need safflower seeds. The song birds love them, but the squirrels don't care for the taste."

I bought filled the feeder with safflower seeds and, voila!, no more squirrels.

  14. Oh my he really was sneaky but you've got to admit he was cute. It is amazing how they can manage to get at those feeders. I just leave seeds & peanuts out for them and the birds together.

  17. Quite a trickster!
Lilly seems to be taming the snowshoe hare we have coming in our yard - tonight she got within about 3 feet of it. :) I wish she'd have told me - I would have gotten some pictures of it!

  18. I have bunny issues in my garden, the little stinkers love to munch on the hostas. Maybe they are delicious and we're all missing out on something great, huh?
